That's why we offer ViziLite® Plus, a simple yet powerful screening system designed to help us identify and evaluate any abnormalities in your mouth that might be missed during a regular visual examination.

Oral cancer affects thousands of people each year, and early detection is key to more effective and less invasive treatment, ultimately leading to better outcomes. The ViziLite® Plus exam is a quick and completely painless procedure that takes just a few minutes.

During the screening, you will rinse with a specially formulated mouthwash. This rinse helps to make any abnormal cells in your mouth more visible. Your dentist or hygienist will then use a safe, low-intensity light source to examine your lips, mouth, tongue, and throat. This specialized light allows us to see irregularities that might not be apparent under normal lighting.

If any suspicious areas gets detected, we will gently mark them with a non-toxic TBlue® dye for clear documentation in your records. Depending on the findings, we may recommend a follow-up appointment to monitor the area or refer you to an oral surgeon for a biopsy if it's necessary.

While oral cancer screening is beneficial for absolutely everyone, it holds particular significance for individuals with certain risk factors such as any form of tobacco use (smoking or smokeless), excessive alcohol consumption, a family history of oral cancer, or a known HPV infection. It's crucial to remember, however, that approximately 25% of oral cancer patients have no identifiable risk factors. Therefore, at Oceanside Family Dental, we strongly recommend that all our adult patients consider incorporating ViziLite® Plus screening into their routine dental check-ups to proactively protect their health and gain valuable peace of mind.
