Digital Cavity Detection

In the past, dentists have relied on the dental explorer, also known as the "hook," to detect surface cavities that cannot be seen on x-rays. However, this tool has often caused fear in patients. Our doctors understand and respect our patients' concerns, which is why they have invested in training our hygienists on new, advanced methods of cavity detection.

At our office, we have a range of devices such as the DIAGNOdent by Kavo, the Spectra from Air Techniques, and SOPRO LIFE from Acteon. While these devices work differently, they all operate on the same principle. They utilize light and a small calibration device to identify cavities at their earliest stage. This non-x-ray examination involves shining a painless, laser-like light onto the tooth, and a computer then accurately determines the presence and size of any cavities.

By detecting tooth decay early on, we can prevent cavities from worsening. Treating them at the earliest stage is virtually painless. Additionally, we utilize advanced laser technology such as the Waterlase MD from Biolase or the Powerlase from Lares to precisely and comfortably "laser drill" these cavities. This method eliminates the need for traditional dental drills, minimizing vibration, heat, and sound.

Furthermore, our state-of-the-art digital technology includes the use of digital x-rays. Unlike traditional x-ray machines, digital x-rays offer enhanced radiation protection by reducing emissions by up to 90%. Our staff can conveniently view and enlarge digital x-ray results on monitors, allowing for a thorough examination of your oral health.
