Minimally Invasive Periodontal Treatment
Early diagnosis is crucial for treating Periodontal disease, which affects over 70 percent of our adult population. The disease is primarily caused by genetics and poor oral hygiene, resulting in the buildup of tartar and bacteria beneath the gums.
Periodontal disease is categorized into four stages, with the initial stage characterized by gum inflammation. Some individuals may experience bleeding gums but dismiss it as normal. However, if your hands bled every time you washed them, you would seek medical attention. The same principle applies to your gums – bleeding is not normal and should be promptly addressed.
As the disease progresses, additional symptoms become evident. Patients may complain of bad taste, bad breath, and food getting stuck between their teeth.
In the late stages of Periodontal disease, teeth become loose and may even be lost. This disease can be compared to having termites in a house, as termites slowly eat away at wood without us realizing until it's too late. Similarly, Periodontal bacteria eat away at the bone that holds our teeth in place. If left untreated, tooth loss is the eventual result.

All of our hygienists are trained to diagnose Periodontal disease early and provide minimally invasive treatment. The treatment protocol is tailored to each patient and may include in-office Periodontal therapy, Diode laser treatment, area specific antibiotics, irrigation with bacteria-killing antiseptics, and a home protocol called Perio Protect.
Perio Protect involves the creation of custom Perio Trays using accurate scans of your teeth and gums. These trays, filled with a gel, are used at home according to a prescribed protocol to reduce inflammation and control disease. Unlike rinses, water piks, and floss, the design of the tray allows the gel to reach deep into the gums. This technique has had proven success.
Maintenance is crucial for long-term success. Regular cleanings are necessary to remove plaque buildup around the gums and control disease. It is recommended to have cleanings every 3 months, as bacteria tend to return to the teeth and gums within 12 weeks.
In the past, periodontal surgery was often the first option after initial therapy. However, our proven techniques have significantly reduced the need for surgery in most cases.
